GETTING STARTED WITH THE STREAMWORKS CLIENT SOFTWARE
1. Your computer will require a sound card (or built-in sound system). Your system must be connected to the Internet unless your server is located on your LAN. If you are using a dial-up service, you must first dial your service provider.
2. Activate the StreamWorks client - and you'll first see a license agreement, followed by a "TV" window with various buttons - "browse", "setup", "stop", "exit", "Xing", and several pre-configured StreamWorks server sites. Click on the "Xing" button. You should see a "StreamWorks Browser" window with lots of keywords and buttons. If not, skip to step 5 below.
3. To play something, double-click to select a keyword, such as 8.5kbps (for the low bitrate streams with 9.6 or 14.4kbaud modems), 24kbps (if you have a 28.8kbaud modem), 56kbps or 112kbps (if you have ISDN or faster). On the right, you'll see a selection of live feeds and pre-recorded clips. Double-click on the selection, and after a brief priming period, you should hear music (or see video).
4. You can fine tune performance using "Setup". The "General" settings optimize audio quality (if you have a Pentium, select full / floating / stereo for highest fidelity. The "Server" screen allows you to add new server sites (e.g. KMPS, KPIG, WBAL, CFRA, etc). To do this, you need to know the Internet address or name of the new StreamWorks server (e.g. www.xingtech.com or its actual IP address - 204.62.160.253) - the port number should always be 1558. "Live streams" is useful only for LAN applications, "Buttons" allows you to define additional buttons such as "Xing" for directly connecting to other servers, and "Network" is only useful for LAN applications.
5. If you can't connect, you may be going through a firewall, and need your network administrator to "punch a hole" in the firewall for UDP traffic in both directions on port 1558; then modify WNETVIEW's Server Settings and activate the "Beyond Firewall" option for each pre-defined StreamWorks server. If this doesn't fix things, send email to "streams@xingtech.com" reporting as clearly as possible your configuration (CPU type, TCP/IP vendor) and the problem.
